I was treated perfectly decently and fairly but its just something that you think to yourself, I cant quite believe this is happening to me. And thats the reason why I resigned. Andy: I do, yeah. Certainly, when you find yourself in crisis and thats also, more importantly, just not how I see it. And I have some views on what works and what doesnt work in prison, having been inside one for a while, though I do not claim to be an expert by any means, given the length of time I was there. Ive never been through what youve been through, but a lot of people when they have a day or whatever, you think about other people who are worse off than you. Jane: Well that was sort of going to be my next question, because undoubtedly your role at Downing Street heightened the interest in your trial. Andy: Well I will always argue that the mistakes were not criminal, because thats what I spent a lot of time standing in a witness box arguing and because its what I believe. And then I was told its 18 months and before you know it, youre through that green door and youre handcuffed and youre taken down to the cells. Andy: I dont know the answer to that. And then before you know it youre back in court with a suitcase, waiting to find out how long youre going to go to prison for. The saddest thing in prison is when youre queuing up for the phone, because thats how the system works, you have to wait to be able to use the phone. In the same way, Jane, that I hope that people will not judge me entirely on my mistakes, Im not going to judge other people entirely on their mistakes. It was between governors and there was a proper shortage of staff. [18], On 1 June 2015, the judge, Lord Burns, acquitted Coulson. It was reported that as a condition of his early release on home detention curfew (HDC) Coulson would have to wear an electronic tag until he had served half of his full sentence. Thats why I resigned from the News of the World and then when I was in Downing Street, Im there thinking how on Earth can I do this job? Fair enough, really. And that was, youve got to accept where you are. And a whole lot of stuff happened at the News of the World which should not have happened during my time, and Im sorry about that because the impact of it on an awful lot of people was, the result of it was a lot of pain and a lot of hurt for people. And actually, I dont feel much right now at all, life is good. Youve got to find your match and Ive definitely done that. [14] And I said, look Im going to do this for a while, I think its fascinating, I think it will be an amazing achievement to try and help him get into Number 10, but Im not going to stay. And before I knew it, because its down underneath the Old Bailey where you get on the bus, you then go up a ramp and it was a gloriously sunny day, July the fourth, ironically enough, Independence Day 2014. And, of course, we became friends because we worked together a long time and David and his family went through, as everyone remembers, some truly appalling times during the period. So, actually, often there are these little small acts of kindness in prison, he didnt have to do it but he let me go to the phone and call Eloise and say that this things out there, but just be assured its total rubbish. However, the acquittal was suspended while the Crown considered whether to appeal the decision and was therefore not announced until 3 June. Take control of what you actually have control over and, of course, the main thing that you have control over is your own mind-set and your own attitude. Because they, obviously, are the most important thing in my life, along with Eloise, and I wanted them to see that I was OK. Thats all nonsense. And its going to be Groundhog Day and actually the consequences of that trial could be even worse in Scotland and then a whole load of politics attached to that and theres a whole load of new agendas. And I talked them through it and I explained that Id been found guilty and that Id be going to a prison and then Id be moved at some point to an open prison and then they could come and see me. Andy: In the jobs that I did I never really wanted any profile. And I have to say that we never had any problems. I dont need you take my advice but I do need you to listen to my advice. What I was reading, I disagreed with. And it was over 20 years of my life, Jane, as you know. Did you ever feel scared? I say that because I have been so completely blown away by the support and friendship that Ive had from people who, frankly, owed me nothing. I guess well talk about that in a bit more detail.
